Overview

Compass is a student success and academic advising platform built on top of the Ellucian Experience ecosystem. It brings together career exploration, degree planning, course scheduling, and advisor connectivity into a single, cohesive experience — pulling live data from Ellucian Colleague via Ethos API and Data Connect.

The platform guides students from enrollment through graduation with personalized, data-driven insights. It reads the student's own record at view time, checks it against the university catalog, proposes what's left, and hands their advisor a one-page PDF summary — all without any new servers. Built entirely on Experience, Data Connect, and Ethos.

Key Features

  • Dashboard Card — surfaces one line of live program news on the MyJU portal; opens the full Compass experience
  • Where I Am — shows the student's program, major, and minor pulled directly from their Colleague record, with guided next steps
  • Explore Careers — 831 careers with Jacksonville area pay, 10-year outlook, skills used, and the JU courses that build them; searchable and filterable
  • Interest Quiz — one-question-at-a-time assessment that marks matching careers in the explore view
  • My Plan — degree plan auto-populated from courses already taken (back to 2006), with proposed courses placed by term after prerequisites; live credit meter and graduation pace
  • Course Details — popup per course with catalog description, run history, what it counts toward, and prerequisite status
  • Other Programs — shows how much of another program's requirements are already done; flags entry requirements without promising admission
  • Advisor PDF Summary — one-page PDF generated in the browser: program standing, requirement progress, saved careers, plan, and questions for the meeting
  • Compass Advisor — advisors and Career Services look up any student, load a plan file, or start blank; nothing is stored server-side
  • Compass Stats — anonymous usage dashboard for staff; no student names or IDs collected
  • Self-maintaining — reference data (pay, catalog, skills) refreshes on a 4-week schedule, uploading only what changed

Impact

Compass replaced a third-party career planning vendor tool, consolidating career exploration, degree planning, and advisor prep into a single platform native to the campus portal. With 202 programs, 831 careers, and course history going back to 2006, it serves every student from incoming freshman to returning alumni — with zero new infrastructure required.
